Escambia Transit Survey Gaining Traction

Pensacola, Fla. - Escambia County residents are “making a mark” on the future of public transportation by taking the bus transit survey found at TransitSurvey.org. The survey has received nearly 500 responses – representative of almost 1,000 residents. The survey, which allows residents to voice their opinions, priorities and concerns about public transportation, will help guide the 10-year Transportation Development Plan (TDP). Residents have 17 days left to participate, as this public survey will close April 30, 2011.

To date, current respondents share that:

  • The most important issues facing Escambia County are 1) jobs/new industry, followed by 2) education, 3) family incomes and 4) rising cost of fuel/energy.
  • A majority (63%) ‘strongly agrees’ that an effective public transportation system is important for Escambia County’s economic growth.
  • A majority (68%) say they would support local government funding a public transportation system even if they don’t use it.
  • A majority (53%) would consider using public transportation to get to work.

Do you agree? To have your voice heard, residents are encouraged to visit TransitSurvey.org and take the survey. Already participated? Urge others to get involved and help drive the future of public transportation in your area.

“We are seeing strong interest, public participation and feedback from residents here locally regarding public transportation,” said Bill Morris, Center for Urban Transportation Research. “To date, survey results are showing strong support for public transportation services. This public feedback, coupled with extensive route analysis and research, will guide 10-year transportation recommendations for the area.”

The public survey is a component of the TDP, commissioned by the Florida-Alabama County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), Escambia County on behalf of the Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) and conducted by the Center for Urban Transportation Research. A TDP is required of each transit agency receiving state funding from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Final transit recommendations will be presented to the Escambia Board of County Commissioners and The Florida-Alabama TPO in September 2011.
